Welcome
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We are very excited about the calling the Lord has placed on New Harmony Church to partner with parents in the education of their children. We established New Harmony Christian Academy in 2001 to help fulfill this purpose. As we grow, we continually strive for excellence in both professionalism and ministry.
Our teachers and administrators are born-again Christians. These people are dedicated to the Christian education of your children and will not only serve as teachers, but as role models you can trust. We use Bible-based curriculum by several well-known Christian publishers, and our successful hands-on approach to learning appeals to children, parents, and teachers.
We invite you to read the following Handbook, which contains the philosophy, expectations, and policy of New Harmony Christian Academy. Its purpose is to provide guidelines for a consistent program through the year.
Sincerely,
Craig Smith
School Board Chairman
Mission and Purpose Statement
The mission and purpose of New Harmony Christian Academy is:
. to partner with Christian parents and guardians
. to provide quality Christian education
. to prepare students for a lifetime of fruitful Christian service.
Partnering with Christian Parents and Guardians
New Harmony Christian Academy is a ministry which supports parents and guardians in their Biblical responsibility to nurture and train their children.
Providing Quality Christian Education
As an educational institution, we provide opportunities which allow students to realize their God given potential through quality education with a Biblical perspective. We endeavor to integrate Biblical principles in our policies, in curriculum selection and in the way we relate to one another and to the children.
Preparing Children for a Life-time of Fruitful Christian Service
Our goal in Christian education is to lead children to Christ, build them up in Christ, and to foster within them a desire to use the gifts, talents and abilities that God has given them to serve others to the glory of God. Our mission is to prepare children for life as Christian leaders who choose character before career, wisdom beyond scholarship, service above self and participation as a way of life.
Statement of Faith
We believe in one God, Creator and Lord of the universe, eternally existing in three persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
We believe that the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is God’s authoritative, inspired Word. It is without error in all its teachings, including creation, history, its own origins and salvation. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters of belief and conduct.
We believe that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, died a substitutionary atoning death on the cross, rose bodily from the dead and ascended to heaven, where as truly God and truly man, He is the only mediator between God and man.
We believe in the necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit for the individual’s new birth and growth to maturity and for the Church’s constant renewal in truth, wisdom, faith, holiness, love, power, and mission. Every believer is called to live and walk in the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit so that he will bear fruit to the glory of God and not fulfill the
lusts of the flesh.
We believe that all people are lost sinners and cannot see the Kingdom of God, except through the new birth which takes place through repentance from sin and faith toward God. Justification is by grace through faith in Christ alone.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church which is made up of all believers everywhere in the world, and locally the church is a group of baptized believers who are organized to do God’s will. Its calling is to worship God, and witness concerning its Head, Jesus Christ, preaching the Gospel among all nations and demonstrating its commitment by compassionate service to the needs of human beings and by promoting righteousness and justice.
We believe that Jesus Christ will personally and visibly return in glory to raise the dead and bring salvation and judgment to completion. God will fully manifest His Kingdom when He establishes a new heaven and new earth, in which He will be glorified forever and exclude all evil, suffering, and death.
Philosophy Statement
New Harmony Christian Academy (NHCA) is a ministry of New Harmony Baptist Church. As such, it adheres to the Doctrinal Statement of New Harmony Baptist Church. Teachers and administrative staff at NHCA must be born-again Christians who are consciously committed to Jesus Christ, knowing their lives serve as examples to those whom they teach.
Recognizing that the primary responsibility for education rests with parents (Psalm 78:5,6), NHCA serves as an extension of the family to aid parents in this task. As such, the Academy adheres to Biblical principles of child rearing and discipline (Ephesians 6:1-4; Proverbs 22:6; Colossians 3:20, 21).
The philosophy of NHCA is based on the premise that man’s ultimate purpose is to glorify God (1Corinthians 6:19, 20; 10:31). NHCA exists to help each student reach his full God-given potential by guiding him in developing spiritually and morally, personally, socially and academically (Luke 2:52). The faculty and staff recognize that only when a student accepts Jesus as Savior and yields to His Lordship can he realize his own unique potential (Romans 10:10-13).
Education and learning are Biblical imperatives (Deuteronomy 6:6, 7; Proverbs 3:1-9); therefore, all instruction at NHCA is Biblically based (Deuteronomy 4:2-9). The specific content grows from the following: (1) God’s mandate at creation for mankind to have dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:1; 26-28), requiring learning in the areas of language, mathematics, the physical and natural sciences, technology, and the fine arts; (2) the hostile environment resulting from the fall of man (Genesis 3:9-24), intensifying his need to understand more deeply all of the curricular areas, as well as the social- and health-related sciences and the study of God’s written Word; and (3) the command for Christians to evangelize the lost and to disciple believers (Matthew 28:18-20), further elevating the need to master all of the above areas.
NHCA seeks to develop young men and women who think Christianly, adhere to a Christian world view (Psalm 24:1), and participate as godly members of home, church, and society.

7. to help students become aware of changing world events and interpret them from a Biblical world view (Hebrews 13:8).
8. to help students acquire a knowledge and an appreciation of their Christian and American heritage (Deuteronomy 4:2-9; Psalm 33:12a).

New Harmony Christian Academy admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights and privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, athletic or other school-administered programs.
Professional Affiliation
New Harmony Christian Academy is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). This organization provides leadership in strengthening new and existing schools. NHCA at its inception is moving toward accreditation.
Administration
The Administrator of New Harmony Christian Academy is given the responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the school. The School Board oversees the policies and procedures of the school. The Administrator reports to the School Board at its regular meetings.
Lunches and Snacks
Students may provide their own sack lunch and drink or participate in our hot lunch program. A menu will be furnished at the beginning of each month and may be subject to change. Hot lunches will be paid for in advance, daily, weekly or monthly. Morning and snacks will be furnished by NHCA to Pre-Kindergarten and Elementary students and an afternoon snack to Pre-Kindergarten students.
Arrival and Departure
Students will be dropped off at the west door of the Education building. Parents/guardians accompanying children into the building are asked to park in the parking lot and not in front of the door. When picking up children, parents/guardians are asked to park in the lot.
Parents/guardians picking up children before school is dismissed must sign out through the Administrator’s office. All individuals picking up children must be authorized by the primary parent/guardian through the Administrator’s office. All visitors must check in through the Administrator’s office.
School Cancellation
It is our policy to continue with both Preschool and Elementary school according to our calendar and in spite of the weather. Since we are located on the highway, it will be rare that the weather will prevent access to our building. If it does we will close and, if necessary, we will make a public announcement over the local radio station.
The following holidays will be observed by the school and the campus will be closed: Good Friday, Memorial Day, July Fourth, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day following, and Christmas Week including New Year’s Day. President’s Day will also be observed in Elementary grades.
Medical/Illness
Students exhibiting symptoms of illness such as low-grade fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or other serious symptoms will be sent home. Parents should not send children to school who have exhibited these symptoms until they have been symptom free for 24 hours.
NHCA does not dispense non-prescription medications such as Tylenol. One day’s prescription medication will be administered through the Administrator’s office if instructions are clearly written by parent/guardian. Cough drops may be sent with children when needed.
Parental Support Policy
It is said that wherever two or more are gathered, disputes will arise. However, Christian people know that where two or more are gathered, Jesus is in their midst (Matthew 18:20). NHCA is partnering with Christian parents in the education of their children. Therefore, parents, teachers and students must agree together to support each other in the common goal of teaching and learning Biblical truths. We recommend the following guidelines to parents which will go hand in hand with NHCA policy:
1. To provide an environment at home that is free from a lifestyle contrary to Biblical teachings (Romans 12:2).
2. To encourage good study habits at home (2 Timothy 2:15).
3. To encourage regular attendance and involvement in a Bible believing church (Hebrews 10:25).
4. To pledge support to NHCA authorities, policies, and procedures and, if an issue arises, to follow the procedure outlined below.
5. To not undermine and disparage teachers, administration, or other parents in the eyes of children (Ephesians 4:29).
6. Speak the truth in love and in the spirit of meekness (Ephesians 4:15).
Should a dispute arise among parents, teachers, students and/or administration, Christians are clearly directed how to proceed in solving the issue (Matthew 18:15-20):
1. If a student brings an issue or a concern involving a teacher to the attention of the parent, the parent should react without blame or recrimination toward the teacher. The student should be reminded that the teacher is an authority figure at school. At no time should any parent undermine the authority of the teacher by joining with the student’s complaint and discussing the issue with other parents.
2. If the complaint raises serious concerns in the mind of the parent, he should quietly arrange for a private conference with the teacher.
3. If, after meeting with the teacher, the parent still feels there is a legitimate, serious problem, the parent should quietly arrange for a meeting with the teacher and Director.
4. If the concern is still not resolved after the above steps, it may be brought before the School Board at the next regular or specially scheduled Board meeting. The parent or teacher shall request the Director to place the matter on the agenda one week prior to the board meeting. The decision of the Board is final.
It is understood that the Parent Handbook is a guide to the operation of the school. Not all school or classroom operating rules are printed in the Handbook. The staff may make classroom rules with the approval of the Administrator to meet specific needs during the year. Every attempt is made to inform parents of these rules. Your cooperation and support is required in this partnership of education.
Admission Policy
It has been commanded by God that parents educate their children (Psalm 78:5,6; Ephesians 6:4). NHCA exists to aid and support the Christian parent or guardian in this most important task. Therefore, we have developed an application process, which includes:
1. Completion of the appropriate Application packet (Pre-Kindergarten or Elementary) and payment of the non-refundable Application fee.
2. For Elementary students, an interview with the Administrator is required.
Acceptance is based upon a favorable interview and available space. The parents’ acceptance of school guidelines is a requirement for admission.
Academic and Health Records
All NHCA students must have a health record showing proof of immunization on file in the school office. For Elementary students, academic records and references from the school previously attended are required.
Withdrawal
After enrollment, arrangements for withdrawal must be made through the school office. All fees must be paid before a student’s withdrawal is complete and scholastic records are released. If paid in advance, tuition will be pro-rated; all other fees are non-refundable. If a child is not formally withdrawn by the parent/guardian, the child is considered absent, and tuition continues to be charged until a Withdrawal Form is signed in the school office.
Financial Policy
NHCA has been entrusted with a stewardship (1 Corinthians 9:17, Colossians 1:25) that requires careful financial planning and operation. Fees and tuition are the main source of support for this ministry (Luke 10:7). Therefore, we have adopted the following financial policies:
Fees and Tuition
Application Fee: This fee is non-refundable. Please see the Enrollment Application for fees.
Enrollment Fee: This fee is payable after acceptance as a student in NHCA. This fee is not applicable to Pre-Kindergarten students. The Application Fee may be applied to this fee.
Tuition: Please see the Enrollment Application for tuition rates. There is a 5% discount for the second child and a 10% discount for the third child.
Tuition is payable whether the child attends all scheduled days or not.
Payment Options
All accounts must be paid in advance. Tuition and fees may be paid using any of the following options (these options may not always apply for Pre-Kindergarten students):
1. Annual Payment Option - a single payment of total tuition for the year due in the NHCA office by August 1. A 5% discount will be applied.
2. Semi-Annual Payment Option - two payments (1/2 of total yearly tuition) with the first payment due on August 1 and the second payment due on December 15. There is a discount of 2% with this option, which will be taken on the second payment.
3. Monthly Payment Option - ten payments (August- May) will be automatically withdrawn from either a checking or savings account by electronic withdrawal.
4. Semi-Monthly Payment Option - twenty payments (2 per month, August - May) will be automatically withdrawn from either a checking or savings account by electronic withdrawal (1/2 of the monthly amount each time).
5. Weekly Payment Option - forty payments (4 per month, August - May) will be automatically withdrawn from either a checking or savings account by electronic withdrawal.
An authorization for electronic withdrawal must be completed for families who select the monthly, semi-monthly, or weekly payment plan. The authorization form must have a voided check or a savings account deposit slip attached. Whenever a change of bank or account occurs, the school office should be notified and a new authorization form must be completed.
Holding Fees (Pre-Kindergarten Only)
After three months of attendance, year-round children are entitled to one unpaid week of vacation time. If an extended absence is requested, such as the summer off, a Holding Fee is charged to guarantee your child’s position will be available upon your return. This fee is non-refundable and will be applied to your account once the child returns. Please refer to the Enrollment Application for the Fee. Written notification must be given the school office at least two weeks in advance of the absence.
Payment of Accounts
All accounts must be paid in full before a student can receive a report card or transfer of any records to another school.
Insufficient Funds Fee
There will be an insufficient funds fee of $25.00 assessed anytime an electronic withdrawal is attempted and insufficient funds are available to make the withdrawal. A service charge of $25.00 will be applied to any returned check.
Late Pick-up Fee
Campus will close at 5:30 P.M. Late fees in the amount of $5.00 per 15 minutes will be assessed to students who are picked up after closing. Chronic lateness may result in dismissal of your child from the school.
Academic Policy
It is the desire of NHCA to help enhance the God-given talents and abilities in each child so that he might conform to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). Our God is excellent (Exodus 15:7) and demands excellence of us (Philippians 4:8, 2Peter 1:5-8, 10). As we proceed in the academic training and development of the child, we seek the following goals:
1. Students will be encouraged and motivated to achieve at their highest level of ability.
2. Students will perform at an acceptable level of competency in the basics as defined in our curriculum guide, which will enable them to function adequately in our society.
3. Students will demonstrate good study habits through the satisfactory completion of various assignments.
4. Students will demonstrate development and progress in communicating through verbal and non-verbal methods (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
5. Students will demonstrate ability to work independently through following directions and completing various assignments.
6. Students will use the Bible as the ultimate source of truth as they develop in their creative and critical thinking process.
7. Students will learn that the Scriptures teach that God created man in His image. They will be encouraged to appreciate the God-given creative abilities in others and themselves.
8. Students will appreciate our American heritage. They should be able to demonstrate an attitude of patriotic spirit and good citizenship through current events and government.
Achievement Testing
Standardized tests will be given regularly to Elementary students beginning in Kindergarten.
Grading Scale
Prior to Grade 1, parents will receive a Progress Report that will assess the student’s progress in age-appropriate performance on many levels. Kindergarteners are assessed in Social behavior, Reading/Language, and Mathematics. In Grades 1 and following for these and all other courses, a letter grade will be issued based on a grading scale approved by the administration.
Report Cards/Progress Reports
Formal report cards, which will become part of the student’s permanent school record, will be sent home after each quarter. (Kindergarteners will not receive a report card the first quarter. Progress will be communicated at the parent/teacher conference.) At the Pre-Kindergarten level, Progress Reports are issued at the end of the first semester, and again at the end of the school year.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Conferences will be scheduled for all students after the first quarter. Parents may request a conference anytime a need arises.
Promotion and Retention
The teacher has the responsibility to personally monitor the progress of each child under his/her care, and to encourage, with individual time and effort, successful achievement of standards and objectives. A part of this responsibility involves the integrity necessary to retain a child in his current grade level until mastery of skills is accomplished. The following criteria will guide teachers in determining the need to retain a student at his current grade level until mastery of certain subjects or skills have been achieved.
1. First and second grades: Unsatisfactory progress in reading and mathematics may result in retention in the same grade.
2. Third through sixth grades: failure in two major subject areas. Major subject areas shall include: mathematics, history, language arts and science.
Unsatisfactory progress (or below grade level) in the development of reading skills may be considered as failure of a major subject. Failure is not mandatory if significant improvement is achieved during the last two nine-week grading periods. Summer school and independent studies may substitute for courses required for a current student.
Attendance Policy
In order to receive the maximum educational benefit, regular attendance is expected. Whenever possible, appointments and vacations should be scheduled at times when school is not in session. When your child is absent we will try to contact you to make sure everything is well. When your child is going to be absent, please call the school to let us know by 8:00AM. This will help us to monitor the safety of our students.
Students are urged to be in class unless an absence is absolutely necessary. Students are expected to be present at least 85% of the school year. This allows for no more than 26 days absent during the year (6.5 days per quarter). Students absent more than this will be in jeopardy of grade retention and forfeiture of the privilege of returning the following year.
Punctuality
Being on time is important. Classes begin promptly at 8:30 A.M. each morning. A student who is not seated in his/her assigned seat at 8:30 A.M. is tardy and must obtain a pass from the Administrator’s office. Pre-Kindergarten students should be in class no later than 8:30 A.M.
Absence
Acceptable excuses for absences are:
1. Illness of student
2. Illness or death in student’s immediate family
3. Participation in approved school activities
4. Special reasons to be evaluated by the administration.
The day your child returns to school following any absence, a note signed by parent or guardian should be brought to the Administrator’s office stating the date and reason for the absence. (This does not apply to Pre-Kindergarten students). No student will be allowed to write his or her own notes.
Make-up Work
School work that is missed during an absence will need to be made up. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure all make-up work is accounted for. Students will have one day for every day absent to complete make-up work.
Conduct Policy
My son, observe the commandment of your father, and do not forsake the teaching of your mother; bind them continually on your heart; tie them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk to you. For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light; and reproofs for discipline are the way of life. (Proverbs 6:20-23).
NHCA partners with Christian parents in the education of their children. It is clear in the Scriptures that God desires His people to lead a disciplined life (Proverbs 6:23, Proverbs 22:12). This discipline begins very early in the life of a child. Parents are instructed to use discipline to teach and direct their children’s behavior (Proverbs 19:18, Proverbs 22:12-14). Discipline is a necessary part of education (Titus 2:12). Therefore, NHCA will continue the parents’ discipline efforts into the classroom. We understand from the Scriptures that God administers discipline because He loves us (Rev. 3:19). We, as parents and educators, should do no less. Discipline and correction will be delivered by the staff and administration of NHCA in love, grace and gentleness (Titus 2:11-12, II Timothy 2:25-26).
The objective of discipline at NHCA is to build in children the following virtues. As we teach these virtues, we will expect corresponding behavior:
1. Cheerful obedience to authority. Authority is granted by God to parents, pastors, and teachers for the purpose of protection and guidance, never for oppression. The student should learn to be thankful and to pray for those in authority over him.
2. Responsibility. The student should be willing to perform assigned or expected tasks.
3. Cooperation. The student should learn to work with his peers and others through group projects.
4. Courtesy and respect for others. The student should learn to be quiet in class, raise hand for permission to speak, not interrupt others, move quietly through the halls, and use proper manners in the lunchroom and bathrooms.
5. Neatness. The student should keep both his workspace and himself in neat order.
6. Truthfulness. The student should be honest with himself and others with regard to both his work and his word.
7. Promptness. The student will be held accountable to be in class on time and to have all assigned work turned in on time.
8. Morally good conduct. The student should conduct himself properly in social relationships, recreational activities, and language.
As we teach these virtues at school, we expect some non-conformity, disobedience and rebellion. Uncooperative children will be guided toward correct behavior immediately. Persistent problems will be reported to parents. Corporal correction (paddling) (Proverbs 15:10, Proverbs 22:12-15) may be administered at any point in the discipline effort at the discretion of the staff. All situations requiring corporal correction shall include the following:
1. A clear, written delineation of the student’s offense and the corrective action taken, which will be mailed to parents.
2. A private setting away from the classroom and other students.
3. A responsible adult witness.
4. No more than 5 swats with an appropriate paddle on the buttocks over the clothing.
5. A time of prayer and affirmation with the student leading to repentance (2 Tim. 2:26)
Parents will be given a list of the expectations and particular discipline steps of their child’s teacher. These will have been previously approved by the administration of NHCA and will conform to the Discipline Policy as stated above.
Since NHCA has developed its Conduct Policy in accordance with the Word of God, it expects the full cooperation of Christian parents when it is necessary to deliver discipline in school. If a parent is in disagreement with the way discipline is handled in the school, please refer to the section of this Handbook entitled “Parental Support Policy”.
Personal Appearance Policy
It is clear from the scriptures that God is far more concerned with the inner appearance of His people than with the outward display of clothing (1 Samuel 16:7, John 7:24). However, He has given us firm guidelines which govern our personal appearance (Deuteronomy 22:5, 1 Timothy 2:9-10). As our children grow in maturity and in the Lord, it is our goal to guide them toward a desire to please the Father and not to bring attention to themselves. The outward appearance should reflect the inner beauty of the spirit (1Timothy 2:9-10, 1 Peter 3:24). Therefore, we have adopted the following guidelines to lead children to this end:
Pre-Kindergarten - Students may wear comfortable, clean play clothing, appropriate for the weather. Children should be clean and well-groomed. An additional set of clothing should be provided the school in case of “accidents”.
Elementary - Students will wear the designated uniform approved by NHCA. The uniform should be kept clean and wrinkle-free. Children should be clean and well-groomed.
For all School activities the following attire and accessories are discouraged: any revealing or immodest clothing such as tube tops, tank tops, shorts above finger-tip length, spaghetti straps, any clothing which reveals undergarments, etc.; any clothing or accessories bearing pictures or symbols which are anti-Christian, including tobacco, alcohol, drugs, or secular music groups; extremely worn, ragged, frayed, torn, oversized or dirty clothing; excessive makeup, multiple earrings, earrings worn by young men, body piercing, tattoos (temporary or permanent), and unusual hair color or styles. Hats are not to be worn inside the Church building.
Our purpose in this policy is to teach children that their bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit; they are not their own, they have been bought with a price; therefore, God should be glorified in the appearance of their bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Should an infraction of the Appearance Policy occur as determined by the staff and/or administration, the child will be privately taken aside and the violation discussed. The child will be asked to contact his parents for a change of clothing.
Extra Curricular Activities
In order to enhance the learning experience, off-campus trips will be taken throughout the year. A permission slip is included in the Application and will be kept on file at the school. Trips will be scheduled in advance and will be included in the monthly activities calendar of the school.
